Have you heard that NUI Maynooth are holding what they call Masterclasses on counseling women in crisis pregnancies. The event is planned for NUI Maynooth (NUIM) on September 16, and is organised by the HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme in association with NUIM’s Department of Adult and Community Education.
The series has attracted controversy in particular because one of the lectures was entitled “Termination of Pregnancy: a lawful choice” after numerous complaints both to the NUI and the HSE they have now changed the name of the masterclasses to ‘Termination- dealing with complex issues’.” Speaking about this and after welcoming the name change Ms Uí Bhriain of The Life Institute said “The new title for the masterclass is ‘Termination – dealing with complex issues,'” she said. “I wonder will the lecturer, Sherie Burgh, address the effects of abortion on the unborn child, or on mothers who regret their abortion.”
“The masterclass, which is geared towards medical professionals dealing with clients with crisis pregnancies, claimed that ‘terminating a pregnancy’, is a ‘lawful’ choice. “Their decision to use this phrase was very significant,” said Ms Uí Bhriain. “Abortion is not lawful in Ireland, and the title of the event is a clear indication of the direction the HSE, and the Crisis Pregnancy Programme, would like to take health care professionals dealing with crisis pregnancies. What is worse, they are using taxpayer funds to push their own agenda.”
